On Saturday, 1st February, I had the wonderful opportunity to dine at 'Soul Mama,' the brand new music venue and restaurant founded by the talented YolanDa Brown OBE. Not only is Yolanda a celebrated Jamaican saxophonist and university chancellor, but she is also making waves in the culinary scene with this new venture. The night was particularly special as we gathered to celebrate the late Bob Marley’s 80th birthday.
The atmosphere at 'Soul Mama' was very much alive, with YolanDa leading her band and backing singers in a full-set performance of Bob Marley’s music. The tribute was heartfelt, beautifully showcasing one of Jamaica’s greatest musicians. In the picture, you see YolanDa and me—I'm holding a Jamaica Love program that YolanDa graciously signed for me (I’ll share more about this award-winning play in another blog). The rhythms and melodies that YolanDa delivered through her saxophone had everyone on their dancing feet—including me!
The food offered a delicious reflection of Caribbean culture, creating the perfect backdrop for a night filled with music, singing, and dancing.
I first heard YolanDa play about 13 years ago, and since that moment, her music has always resonated deeply with me. Eight years ago, I had the privilege of meeting her in person, and it has been inspiring to witness her journey, evolving from strength to strength. This growth mirrors so much of what we strive for in our own lives—persevering through challenges while embracing the support of others.
Inside the restaurant is a special feature called the ‘Founders Wall.’ This wall showcases numerous small tiles, each bearing the names of donors who have contributed to helping YolanDa realise her dream. It stands as a testament to the willingness, generosity, and sacrifice of what we can accomplish when we support others. But it also speaks profoundly to the belief in oneself. The sacrifices made and the hard work it takes to step out in faith—to knock on doors and ask for help—can be daunting. I certainly understand how it feels to seek assistance, unsure if anyone will truly grasp your vision. However, with confidence and belief in your dream, you can move forward.
The beautiful aspect of this wall is that it is not yet finished; there's space available for more contributions. This serves as a reminder that none of us are done evolving, and help can come at any time and from anyone. So, leave space for growth, and remember that vision is an active verb —so, I encourage you to wait with expectation!
