About Audrey James

PSYCHOTHERAPIST

Hello and welcome to Restore Black! I'm Audrey James, a psychotherapist. My personal journey through therapy became the catalyst for my career in psychotherapy, driven by a profound desire to guide others in my community towards the same sense of liberation and well-being that I found.

In my quest for a therapist who shared my cultural background, I faced challenges that underscored the lack of representation within psychotherapy. In addition, recognising that Black and Brown communities are slower than their white counterparts in accessing therapy, I attribute this disparity, in part, growing up, discussing feelings was discouraged, contributing to the reluctance in seeking therapy within our communities. This, coupled with the scarcity of therapists of colour, underscores the disparity in accessing mental health support. This realisation ignited my passion to bridge this gap and offer vital representation to those in need within my community.

The concept of "Restore" holds deep significance in my life, stemming from childhood trauma that left me shattered beneath a composed exterior. This theme of restoration continues to shape my professional journey. Exploring the notion of restoration, I was drawn to a definition that resonated profoundly: "To restore something is to give back what has been lost or stolen to its rightful owner.”  Reflecting on this, I am reminded of the historical trauma and systemic injustices that have plagued the Black community, with the enduring effects of slavery and ongoing systemic challenges impacting mental well-being and hindering progress within the Black and Brown communities.

Come, join me and together, let us embark on a journey of restoration, healing and empowerment, for ourselves and our communities.
